Historic Turkish Baths (Hamam) — Essential Istanbul Experience

Discover Istanbul's best historic hamams — centuries-old marble bath houses offering traditional scrub, foam massage, and deep relaxation.

The Hamam Tradition

Turkish baths date back to the Roman and Byzantine eras, refined during the Ottoman period into an art form. A traditional hamam visit includes time in the warm room (ılıklık), hot room (sıcaklık), scrub with a kese (rough mitt), foam massage on the heated marble slab (göbek taşı), and cool-down.

Best Historic Hamams

Çemberlitaş Hamamı (1584, designed by Mimar Sinan) — most popular with tourists, excellent location. Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı (1580, Sinan) — beautifully restored, luxurious experience. Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı (1556, Sinan) — most opulent, between Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque. Galatasaray Hamamı
