Galata Bridge — Istanbul's Iconic Fishing Bridge

Walk across the double-decker bridge connecting the Old City to Beyoğlu, with fishermen above and seafood restaurants below.

Overview

Galata Bridge spans the Golden Horn, connecting Eminönü (Old City) to Karaköy (Beyoğlu). The current bridge, built in 1994, is the fifth bridge on this site. Its upper deck is always lined with fishermen casting lines into the Golden Horn, creating one of Istanbul's most iconic scenes.

What to Do

Walk across for views of the Süleymaniye Mosque, Yeni Cami, and Galata Tower. The lower deck houses dozens of fish restaurants — try a balık ekmek (fish sandwich) from the boats at the Eminönü end. At sunset, the bridge offers magical photo opportunities with mosques silhouetted against the sky.

Visiting Info

Open 24/7 and free to walk across. The bridge is a major tram stop (T1 line). Best experienced at sunset or early morning. Located between Eminönü and Karaköy.
